Shades

Dance choreography and performance

In the film Shades we are invited to a place between light and dark. Embraced by dusk, perception changes and senses open up to the mysterious and unknown. Through movement of body and light interactions develop, shift, dissolve and reorganize; creating patterns that move in unpredictable and transformational ways. Stillness is overlapped by rhythmical vibrations, taking us from meditative to passionate states of being. Through touch we can start listening to the quiet, subtle inner voice of ourselves.

Shades was first created as a stage performance. The starting point was to work with only a few mobile lights and with shadows, exploring looking at movement of light as an extension of bodily movement and as part of choreography. Where does bodily movement and movement of light overlap and hook into each other? And what happens to our perception in that overlapping? How does that affect our sense of what is reality and what is fiction?

The artistic process investigated relationships to the performance space. The choreography travels through different areas of the performance space and its outskirts. In relation to closeness, distance and perspective opening up for different ways of seeing and percieving. The lights were managed by the dancers throughout the performance as part of the dance and as an integral part of overall performativity . In Shades touch is the initiator of the movement material. It was explored through interaction between bodies, gaze and the interaction of light and shadows. Touch in Shades is a silent communicator where subtle signals may be allowed to speak to be heard and sensed.
